Size :

11” x  25” (with handle)


Materials:

1/8” wide flat braid (soutache)

    288 yds black and white mix

2 glass beads, 3/4” diameter, with large openings

Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook

Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles


Gauge:

16 sts and 24 rows  = 4” in stock st

      (knit 1 row, purl 1 row)


Instructions:


Straps:

With one spool of soutache, CO 7 sts for one strap ; with another spool of  soutache, CO 7 sts for 2nd strap. Work both straps at the same time with the separate spools.


Row 1: K 3, sl 1, K 3.

Row 2: Purl.


Rep Rows 1 and 2 until  each strap measures 7”.


Increase Rows:

Working in (K 3, sl 1) patt,  inc one st each side on every odd-numbered row, and purl every even row, until there are  47 sts  on each strap. Then increase at one edge only: 48 sts in each strap. Slip all 96 sts onto one needle.


Sides:

Row 1: *K 3, sl 1; rep from * across.

Row 2: Purl

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures

9 3/4”, ending by working a purl row. Dec 6 sts evenly spaced across next row,  then purl one row.


Bottom:

Row 1: *K8, K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 2 and all even rows: Purl.

Row 3: *K7,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 5: *K6,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 7: *K5,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 9: *K4,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 11: *K3, K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 13: *K2,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 15: *K1,  K2 tog; rep from * across.

Row 17: *K2 tog; rep from * across.


Finish off, leaving an 18” length for sewing.  Thread soutache into a yarn needle and draw through rem sts. Pull up tightly and secure.


Finishing:

With wrong sides tog, sew center seam. Sew ends of handles together. With crochet hook, work one row of single crochet around each edge of handle.


Bag Ties

With crochet hook, join soutache with a sl st  to center of one side of bag opening on outside.

Ch 28;  sl st in each ch, finish off. Slip one bead over end of tie.


Make a 2nd tie in same manner on opposite side of bag opening.
